Well your probably not going to like my answer, but replacement with a
later model rear end is your best bet. Don't EVEN think about rebuilding
the unit unless you replace all the bearings at this point - it's false
security to do otherwise - If replacing with a later unit try to get a 76
or later diff as these are the strongest - The *problem* with this avenue
is that if its a stock Spitfire MK3, then the flanges on the axle shafts
and the driveshaft will be the "small" ones, and would have to be replaced
as well as the rear case of the differential (unless you have already
installed a swing spring from a later Spitfire). The reason is that the
flanges and bolts were increased in size with the MK4 1971 and later
Spitfires (stronger) and the case on later diff's is not drilled and tapped
for the two extra studs that the conventional transverse rear spring uses.
