Hello all,
I just replaced my floats today in the float chamber of the dual carbs and
tuned the carbs (pretty well...but not perfect). SO i decided i wanted to
get the car out on the road! So i drove her out of the garage out the
driveway and onto the street! For the first time in over 4 years, she is
back on the road! But it was all short lived. No sooner did i get into
second gear, there is a loud chunking noise, the drive shaft starts going
crazy and then one more thud and the car came to a halt. My rear wheels
locked up and the drive shaft dropped to the ground at the differential.
Upon closer investigation, the pinion flange had fallen out of the
differential!!! WOW! so i tried pushing the car back down the street but
now my differential is locked. I got some help from my father (who was
video taping the whole ordeal at the time), and we rocked the car back and
forth forcefully until the car would roll. Lots of chatering and clunking
got it back in the garage.
I took the differential out, and tore it apart. Guess what i found?!?!? An
entire bearing that looks like it had a bomb explode in it, resting in
pieces on the bottom of the differential. Upon further investigation, it
was the rear pinion bearing that had "blown up" and now the teeth on the
crown wheel and gear are shot!
So here is(are) my question(s) to all of you.
1.) should i go ahead and replace all of the bearings in the differential?
or just the one that shattered? the rest seem to be in fine shape.
2.) Should i just find a rebuilt differential and replace the whole thing?
3.) Lastly, what kind of oild shoudl i use in the differential when i get
bac around tp puting it back together?
Thanks all. Your help has gotten me this far. and i can't thank you enough,
Dave
