I suspect the advice you've received about replacing the vertical link
is overly cautious. Well meant, but overly cautious.
The Spitfires trunnion is an Achilles heel. It only has two axes of
rotation, and is poorly lubricated. As a result, failure of the
trunnion and or vertical link is far from unheard of. So I rather
suspect the advise is because of this. I personally would not go and
replace it as many replacement pieces are sub-par. I would recommend
opening up and examining the trunnion for inspection, cleaning and
lubrication.
The oem trunnion lubrication is oil, not grease. In the time of the
old Spitfire greases were not good flowing lubricants. So attempting to
lubricate the trunnion with a grease often resulted in very little
lubrication to the entire unit. Wear and failure would result. While
modern greases can be vastly superior and provide the adequate
lubrication, simply pumping some into a trunnion that has sat for 13
years is rather questionable, at least in my opinion.
