OK, well, to actually try to answer the poster's question...
It guess that if you only have a small number of jobs in mind, you'd do
well to just ask around among your local LBC community for the name of a
trustworthy pro, and farm the work out.
If you're determined to do the work yourself, however, (may your tribe
increase!) then the thing to do is sign up for a MIG welding course at
your local community college. Don't buy a welder and a "welding for
dummies" book and just dive in-- you're guaranteed to fail. Welding is
something that has to be done under a coach's direction, if you're to
have any chance at all.
As to specific processes, and here I speak from the list's experience
and not my own, MIG is the most useful process on our cars. People I
know seem to get by with a 120 V unit just fine: you don't need a 230 V
tool for the sheet metal your Spit is made of.
Brand names: Lincoln & Miller are probably the best known brands. HTP
also has a good reputation. I don't own any of these, I'm just
parroting what I've heard. FWIW.
