Sounds like the sending unit has been installed backwards.

Probably a bad sending unit.

Engine oil is about the same viscosity as gear oil, or slightly less.
It won't make the box feel stiff. Lack of lubrication on the plastic
pivot ball of the shifter will though.

Holes are already there. Why do you need to make new ones?
