Todd,
One quick point - I've never yet (touch wood!) needed to do any work on the
bottom end of my engine, but I have it on good authority that it is possible
to do it without needing to remove the engine from the car.
Of course, working lying on your back in the restricted space under the car
on jackstands, with oil dripping in your eye, is not great. But removing
the bonnet, disconnecting everything connected to the engine, and getting
the engine out (particularly if you don't have easy access to a good hoist)
is a hassle too.
Anyway, at least you have a choice ;-)
