Two sockets and a big hammer.
A few years ago, I was doing the same thing. Finally took it to a shop with
a press. The owner said, "no press for this on," pulled out a big sledge
hammer, set a socket a little bigger than the spider cap on the work bench,
placed the shaft in a vice w/ the spider yoke resting on the socket, placed
a second socket just a little smaller than the spider cap on the cap and hit
it *hard* a couple of times. This pressed the bottom cap most of the way
out, pulled it the rest of the way with vice grips.
