James,
Looks like the head is new?
If you have not had any machine work done, the machine shops usually have a
vat of hot cleaning solution that they put parts in the clean them. This
stuff really cleans parts very well. Problem is that it will also eat Freeze
plugs, cam bearings, and other soft metals.
After a dip in the stuff the parts come out nice and clean, they will also
rust very quickly. When I had mine done I had already purchased all the
paint that I needed to paint the whole engine so when I arrived home I began
the process of finishing the outside of the head and engine parts.
As a prep before painting I used a lacquer thinner to wipe down all surfaces
that would receive the paint.
I painted it with a NAPA Engine paint. I think PPG makes it.
It's been on the engine for 3 years, there are some areas that have peeled
but as a whole it looks real nice.
The KEY is in the PREP !
NO OIL,SILICONE,DIRT, just clean metal.
Color is up to you

Would this stuff be any good for painting my cylinder head with? At the
moment it's got a sort of weird black stuff on it... not really paint...
just sort of stuck on dirt - its werid. I havent tried removing it yet.
You can't really see from the photos...

And what about cleaning out the water ways in the head? They've got lots
of yucky hard water deposits - a bit like limescale... Im thinking kettle
descaler or something...
Oh - and storing the thing... it might be a while until I get the lower
part of the engine sorted - is a drench in WD40 a good idea?
