The only problem here is where to mount the merc switch to react to the
angle ofthe maplight. It would have to be really small

I dont know what sort of switch is used on a map light, but could you not
use a mercury switch. I use one on my bonnet light so that when I open the
bonnet the light comes on and goes out when i close it. Much safer than a
mechanical switch. Just my 2p worth
