Joe,
In fact MG Rover is now an independant company, since they split from BMW a
couple of years ago. With the split came most of the former British Leyland
companies (Austin, Morris, Standard, Wolseley, Austin-Healey), with the
exceptions of Triumph, Riley and Mini (previously just a model name, now a
brand in its own right) retained by BMW, and Land Rover sold to Ford.
Jaguar, as you say, is owned by Ford (as well as Aston Martin, Lagonda, and,
as just mentioned, Land Rover).
Some of the lesser-known defunct brands may be near impossible to track down
the ownership of, unless (like Triumph) they became part of a conglomerate
which itself is still in production, or has been bought by another
conglomerate. Apparently, before its resurrection in the mid-'80s, the
Bugatti brand was owned by a manufacturer of sunglasses!
