Thanks to all of the listers who responded to my plea for help! I took the car
to a local British car repair shop, and they diagnosed the problem as a bad 3rd
gear thrust washer. So looks like I get to replace or rebuild the
transmission. I guess that I messed it up when my hydraulics failed.
