Nick, Mike, Bill, Jeff, Doug, to everyone who helped out.....
We are doing a lot of testing, considering all the point you raised. We're
going to turn the prop. shaft 180 degrees to see if this makes a difference.
We're going to make sure everything is balanced. For testing, we'll attach it
to our spare diff and have the big drill run it. Maybe we'll be able to spot
an unbalance somewhere. If all else fails, off it goes to a shop to be tested.
It's probably some mistake we made along the way.
We have two new wheels on the Spit, they were tested. Don't think it's them,
as the vibration is too severe.
Just when I said I needed a GT6 for my next project. I shouldn't have said
that in front of my Fly......should have known better......yes........

Spitfires are very sensative to propshaft problems, and anything wrong will
manifest itself as a vibration. So you need,
1 A sliding joint (if fitted) not siezed or worn.
2 Both UJs must be in line with each other.
3 Both UJs without wear, tightness or slackness,
4 The prop itself must be balanced.
Sometimes fitting new UJs can unbalance a prop, and it is essential before
balancing to ensure that conditions 1-3 have been met - and it all comes from
having the diff attached to the chassis so the only place for all unbalance to
end up is the whole car.

Hi everyone,
after just explaining to the list about my ailing Spit, I'm now asking for
your opinion.
I've just installed a new shock, a brand new wire wheel, and my better
half Wilf literally lost his nerves installing two new u-joints.
This done, we were hoping to have the Spit running again.
It wasn't meant to be. We have a bad vibration, which may be coming from
the propeller shaft.
The u-joints we installed are located at either end of the propeller
shaft, one near the diff, the other near the transmission.
We just spend several hours lying under the Fly, taking the exhaust off,
then removing the propeller shaft.
The u-joints seemed to have been installed slightly uneven, we therefore
reset them in straight, thinking that this may be the problem of the
vibration.
After putting the Spit back together again, we went for a drive. The
vibration continues, it increases with speed.
At about 50 miles per hours, it's very intensive.
It's not the balancing of the wheels. It's more severe than that.
What could we have done wrong?
