Hi list
Haven't posted to the list in a long while ( due to out of town work
activities ) so here goes ....
The GT 6 I bought the other day is equipped with a strange Triumph o/d
gearbox ( or tranny as most of you call it ) .
The clutch slave cylinder is mounted to the left and next to it appears the
number MB 114254 on the gearbox casing ( bellhousing part ) . The numbers
306812 SM and V 2947 are stamped on the right hand side of the gearbox
casing . The o/d solenoid is horizontally on the left hand side of the
gearbox and the o/d serial number is 22/61973/006208 .The speedo cable
exits on the right hand side and there is no speedo angle drive . The
numbers 3 J 69 and 55 70 D are stamped on the right hand side of the o/d
casing . The o/d switch is located in the gear lever knob ( but the GT 6 is
also equipped with the steering column mounted switch , which is correct for
a GT 6 Mk1 ) . Reverse is to the right and back .
Is this a Triumph 2000 saloon gearbox , or what ? D-type , A-type or J-type
o/d unit ?
The differential appears to be from a Mk 3 Spitfire as the number appears to
be FD 10086 .
Engine number is KC 8617 E which is correct for a Mk 1 GT 6 .
Another related question ...
Is it advisable to mate a GT 6 Mk 1 engine to a Spitfire Mk 3 o/d gearbox
and differential ? Can it be done ? Pros and cons ?
Kind regards .
Chris de Wet .
