Marc,
Newton Commercial (www.newtoncomm.co.uk) manufacture new original-spec
covers and leather alternatives - it is their stuff that is supplied by most
of the other dealers (e.g Rimmers and Moss).
Alternatively you could fit a completely different seat. Several have tried
the Mazda MX5 seats (www.teglerizer.com has a fitting guide), which is what
I have done. Fine if you are 6" (sorry, 1.83m for those of European
origin!) or under, but I'm 6'2" and I don't really fit in my car as well as
I used to. I got mine from a scrap-yard (in perfectly reasonable condition)
for #50 for the pair - after a LOT of calling around I had quotes varying
from #50 to #200!
You could also buy a seat from a company that supplies them for kit cars -
www.cobraseats.com has a variety to choose from, and I expect they could
help you select one that would fit in the available space.
Just a few options for you to consider! Remember that only Spitfire seats
are designed specifically for the Spitfire, including the fact that the
centre of the seat actually sits LOWER than the rails in a recess in the car
floor (unlike any alternative you are likely to find), so many alternatives
will have you sitting higher in the car, unless they have a very thin base
indeed. On the other hand, alternative seats can offer both better comfort
and better support against cornering forces, I've definitely found this with
the MX5 seats.
I've probably just made your life harder, rather than easier, with more
choices, but it's something to think about!
Good luck,
Richard & Daffy
