Your analysis is correct. (But the carb leak is a red herring).
The older 3-rail transmissions definitely did not have a real seal.
I'm not sure when they finally added the seal.
I have managed to make this same mistake a couple of times
over the years. I assume your clutch chatters like crazy when
you take off in 1st gear from a stop.
I suggest putting up with it for a few hours of driving, and
then deliberately smoke the clutch a few times (let it slip
under full power until you can really smell it.) Hopefully
you will burn off enough of the oil to make it acceptable.
If you can't cure it this way, no further harm done.
