Hi,
Thanks for the responses to my original post. I just wanted to give a
little more info on my Spit in case anyone was curious. I rebuilt and
balanced the engine about two years ago (high compression 1976 model)
and instaled ARP rod bolts, new timing chain, heavy duty valve springs,
a Spitbits fast road cam, rocker arm spacers and did some minor headwork
along with all the routine stuff. I also upgraded the front coil
springs, installed a heavy duty rear spring and polyurethane bushings
and gas shocks. Since then I have autocrossed it several times and on
more than one ocassion have turned it over 6500 rpm in the lower gears.
I haave never had any problems, it still has good oil pressure, doesn't
smoke or make any unusual noises. I've calculated the speed using the
appropriate diameters for the tires and rims that I have and based on
the tach, rather than an inaccurate speedo have reached 94-96 mph
several times. I've never felt the car float, but the springs that I
have installed lower the car by about 1.5 inches and the polyurethane
bushings along with the shocks really firm up the ride. I would highly
recommend them. I think that with an earlier larger intake manifold, a
freer flowing cat-back exhaust and the HIF 6 carb, I may be able to get
the engine to pull the redline in top gear, but we'll see. My main
interest was to develop a smog legal setup that would give performance
equivalent to the late model European Spits with the 1.5 SUs of about 75
hp , hopefully more. The Triumphtune manual quotes HP of 105 - 115 for
their stage 3 kits (with major headwork!), I wanted to keep this a
bolt-on experiment as I dont have $1500 to get serious headwork done.
So as I said I'd be happy with 75 hp. Any thoughts or suggestions are
welcome.
Thanks,
Glenn
