I had to drill one of mine out too. As far as keeping from stripping heads,
I have this 50 year old monster screwdriver, and I put it against my shoulder
(the handle end) and then put pressure on the screw while I turn with a
cresent wrench-usually works-usually. Glad you got it loose. Even after I
drilled mine, I had to use the mallet and hardwood block, the car had been
sitting and the shoes were frozen.
