The waxstat is just like your cooling system thermostat, it expands and
contracts with temperature. Where the cooling system thermostat opens
and closes to regulate water flow, the waxstat makes the jet go up and
down, leaning and richening the mixture based on underhood temperatures.
Me personally, I'd defeat the waxstat or replace it.

Will you need new needles? Yes, for that perfect tune. What you've
got right now will run, and may well run adequately to suit you, or even
superbly. No real way to tell except trying it out and going from
there.

You can cob up cheap air filters from Briggs and Stratton engines.

For rebuilding, I very strongly recommend you use the more expensive
correct rebuild kit from SU (or Burton or such as the company is called
now). I've used others, and had a great deal of problems with bowl
vibration and such. The bushings and bolt threads and such are all very
precisely made, the aftermarket vendors are too sloppy.

I'd also suggest an inline pressure regulator. Many aftermarket stock
fuel pumps put out too much pressure for the SU to handle (and for the
ZS for that matter). Resulting in overfilling the bowl when the engine
revs up, giving all sorts of tuning problems with the constantly varying
fuel mixture.

Paul Tegler has on his web site some very good pictures for hooking up
linkage and plumbing the lines. It's very simple to do. A little more
complex to do it "right". He's also got about the slickest and probably
smartest heat shield design. Heat shields are important.

Happy Easter weekend all,

I picked up a complete set of HS4's about a month ago, and I wanted to
check
with all you gurus out there to make sure I don't do anything overly
foolish
(Not that I can generally help it).
What I have is a pair of Waxstat-equipped, Euro-spec HS4's off of a
1500,
and I want to use them on my 1300 engine. SO, here are the issues that
I
know I'll have to deal with:

- Do I perform the "2-pence" waxstat conversion? It seems to be what
I
should do, but I don't really know what Waxstat is and does...
- Will I need new needles? The engine is a fairly tight 1300 with
electronic ignition and what seems to be a mild street cam (It lives
between
3-5000 rpm pretty much all the time) (When it's driving), so maybe I
should
just give the ones in there a try?
- Anyone know where to get a couple of cheap air filter assemblies
until I
scrape together the cash for K&N's?
- Any tips for the rebuild?
- Does anyone have a detailed description of the plumbing available?
I've
seen some pictures, but it would be nice to know for sure where
everything's
supposed to be!
