What, you didn't check your manual for the proper torque when closing
those nipples previously?
 :-)
Boy, that's pretty foolish. Not that those words are meant as a
personal slur, just a general comment...

Ok, ribbing aside. What you describe is a type of easy-out (EZ-out,
Eazy-out, various other trade names). There are two main types. One is
a reverse threaded type, some with shoulders. Expensive tool companies
like Snap-On carry them. I personally don't care for this type. They
have the nasty habit of breaking up in their socket, as well as
expanding the part you are attempting to remove, making it fit even
tighter in the hole.

The second type of easy-out is the straight type. Looks a lot like a
reamer. You tap this in, and then use a wrench to back it out. These
don't expand the fitting as much, and are more controllable in my
opinion. They are also cheaper.

If either of them break off in side, cry. Cry a lot. 'Cause the metal
is hardened, and you can't drill it back out. At least not with a
normal drill bit. That's why easy-outs are a real gamble to use. They
are very prone to making a bad situation much worse.

You can simply drill the old nipple out (or bolt, or whateve else you
break off in the future). Get it reamed out to the threads and then
carefully use a chisel and you can pop them out without damaging the
bore. If you happen to get some reverse threaded drill bits (rare and
expensive), you've got a fair chance that the nipple will suddenly
unscrew while you're drilling it out.

I now have not just one, but two brake bleed nipples that have the top
half
broken off, as they sheared rather than unscrewed when I tried to
loosen
them.

I remember mention before of some sort of device which has a reverse
thread
on it, so you can screw it into a hole in a broken threaded device -
the
thread grips, then you keep on turning to back the broken item out of
its
hole. What is this thing called (so I don't make a fool of myself
when
asking for it!)? Any ideas where (in the UK) I would find them for
sale?

Also, since I'll have to replace the bleed nipples, does anyone know
if
Speed Bleeders (one-way bleed nipples that you don't need to screw back
in
every time you lift your foot up off the pedal while bleeding) are
available
anywhere in the UK?

Moral of the tale - don't do your bleed nipples up too tight. One day
you
will have to undo them again, and they ain't too strong!
