Ted -

You haven't tried the rope trick yet!

Put a few of the head nuts back on, but not very far.  Remove the 
spark plugs and get some rope.  Cut the rope into two pieces.  Rotate 
the crank so that two cylinders are at BDC (bottom dead center). 
Feed rope into those two cylinders; as much as you can.

Put a 1 13/16" (IIRC) socket on the crank nut, grab a breaker bar, 
and stand on it.

The rope, being soft, will not damage the inner surfaces of the 
motor, yet it is not really compressible, and so will apply force to 
the head as the pistons move  up from BDC.

The head should pop off.  The head nuts you put back on will keep it 
from toppling down off the block and smashing your toe.
