James,
I had a similar problem with my door handle. Like you said, once I
pulled the panel off it was fairly obvious. A thin rod connects the handle
to the mechanism. It simply passes through a hole in the handle and is then
bent back. The rod had come loose causing the handle to flop around.
Take off the handle trim plate and the window handle. Pop off the
trim panel and good luck!

One thing Ive learnt since having the spit is that everything happens
(i.e. breaks) in two's.
Today's darstadly duo - Inside Door Handle and Brake Pedal Light
connection
Getting trapped inside a car isn't my idea of fun - I considered all the
possibilities - clambering over to the passenger side and getting out
that way - putting the top down - unzipping the rear window and getting
out - getting out the side windows - and then I realised that I could
just put down the window and open it from the outside. At first it didnt
work - but that was just because I wasn't pulling hard enough
(surprising how much force it takes when you're on the inside)
So the inside handle is broken - I havent investigated it yet - I don't
want to pull off the lining until I have some time to get it back on.
Basically the inside handle is loose. I hope itll be obvious when I get
to it.
