I've was also taught that when your car is overheating, first thing you do
isturn on the heater to help dissapate some of the heat.
When your gauge reads high and the air blows cold, it could be that the
coolant level in your radiator is low. I have had this happen to me more
than once.

Mike,
I have found that using the heater can reduce the car temperatue by
around a quarter (on the dial). This is a trick that I have used in
summer when sitting in traffic and the temperature has been creeping up a
little too high. I would not say the rise in temperature that you have
experienced is unusual, although I am surprised that the temperature
drops as far as to the quarter mark, that sounds to be a bit low.
