The maplight turns off when it is pushed up. The switch is a simple contact with I believe a ball bearing and either metal or plastic section. When it's all the way up its on the plastic (and off) and down is on the metal (and turned on). I 've seen threads on this before where the lamp switch is worn and it won't stay up. Mine just stays up and no more. I have heard of inventive ways ( e.g. velcro etc.) to keep it up. Also you need to turn it the right way to get it all the way up and almost flush with the top of the glove box.
