Zach,
In the UK, a fully reconditioned engine is about #600 ($900), while the
dealers will pay around #50 ($75) for an unknown-condition engine to be
taken in for reconditioning. So a fair price should lie somewhere between
the two.
Since this engine has not had any reconditioning or rebuilding work done,
I'd say that sounds like a fair-ish price IF it all works fine. But, you
could pay that money and it turns out it doesn't work as well as the seller
had indicated, then you have nothing.
Basically, you either need to negotiate some sort of guarantee with the
seller, or get the price down if you are going to take the engine 'as seen'
- the sort of price that wouldn't be the end of the world to you if it
doesn't work. I'm not sure exactly what you could negotiate by way of
guarantee - maybe something like a minimum compression of 140 on all
cylinders, the engine not to give off blue smoke (indicating oil burning) or
white smoke (indicating blown head gasket) when running, something like
that. Asking him to guarantee no oil leaks might be asking too much!! If
he doesn't agree to that, he can't be that confident of its good running. I
probably wouldn't expect him to guarantee it for any length of time, you
should only be asking that it will run properly when installed. And GET IT
IN WRITING!!!
Good luck!
