Hopefully you managed to check the needles in the carbs last night and found
that they are ABT (standard). For use with K&Ns a good starting point is to
use AAQ needles. These have the same diameter when at idle, but get thinner
as the piston / needle rises at higher revs, thus allowing more fuel to
flow. You will also have to change the damper springs inside the carb body
to stiffer ones (red {4.5 oz} to yellow {8 oz} dot). This is to give a
stable idle condition and to prevent the needle rising too rapidly during
acceleration.
This set up worked great on my car which also had a full sport exhaust. A
standard exhaust will be more restrictive to airflow, so you may want a
slightly leaner needle such as AAT.
You will need to visit a carb specialist to get these needles I think, or
somewhere like Moss in South London who specialise in Triumph tuning parts.
Hope this is useful, let me know how you get on.
