James, it sounds like you may be running too rich with the new
carbs. What needles are fitted (3 letter code)? Paul Tegler's site has
good info about this. You will have to 'enrich' (thinner needle) from the
standard carb needle but you may have overdone it (check for sooty spark
plugs). Did you change the springs inside the dash tops (they are colour
coded with a paint mark)? Stiffer springs will smooth the acceleration as
the carb piston will not be allowed to rise so quickly when more air goes
through the carb. This may cause surging / throbbing, but it should have
gone away when the carbs were swapped back.
