As I understand it, it's not the weight, it's the fresh oil that
helps.  Some oil is entering the combustion chamber via the
PCV valve (OK, there is no actual valve, but you know what I mean).
If it's old oil, it's been contaminated by nasty combustion
by-products that have been blowing past the rings into
the crankcase over the last however miles.  And when this
oil is sucked into the crankcase, it introduces those extra
pollutants for the sniffer to object to.

How much difference this really makes is beyond me, but my
neighbor/mechanic recommends it.  I'm usually dealing with,
uh, issues for emmissions inspections myself and every little
bit helps.

Did you ever consider trying one of those "Add To The Fuel Tank
And We Guarantee You'll Pass Or Your Money Back" snake oils?  B-)
