What Cover???  The Spit diff comes apart to separate the two halves.  YOu can 
drain it by disconnecting the axles and drive shaft, removing the stub
axles, removing the two nuts that secure the front allowing the front to drop 
and then remove all 8 bolts that hold the two halves together.  you may
not have to fully separate the halves to drain it, but with the stub axles in, 
it won't come apart enough to allow a gap for draining the oil.  But as
long as you have it that far apart, 
you may as well remove the front and do an inspection of the internal parts!
