Student welder here.
I'm told that with a MIG unit it's pretty easy to run a
nice-looking bead that's not fused to the base metal. Flux core
is messier but gives better penetration. When the time comes to
buy my own tool, I'm going the flux core route, either Miller
brand or Lincoln Electric.
PS it really is harder than it looks (for me, anyway). Take a
course at your local community college.
