John,
Basic rule for jacking a chassis car is - always jack onto the chassis. Stick
to that and you can put the jack anywhere you want! So, if you want to jack
up the front, just use the front cross-member - if you can get to it. The
problem with the Spit is that it is so low, plus the anti-roll bar gets in the
way. A low trolley jack may be able to squeeze under. If space is tight,
jack up onto something you can reach until the car is lifted a bit, stick some
wooden blocks under the chassis near where you jacked it, lower the jack so
the car is on the block, and now you can move the jack round to where you can
jack directly onto the centre of the front cross-member. Needless to say you
will need to reverse this procedure to get the car down, otherwise you will
end up with the car not quite on the ground and the jack trapped underneath!
Glad to hear you are getting to grips with Saskias working bits! That is what
I like about old cars - with a bit of common sense you can just look at
something and deduce how it works and how to fix it, there is really no
mystery or magic in any of it.
