1)  I checked my sender by sticking it in a pot of boiling water with an
oven thermometer (for a turkey, roastbeef, etc...) and compared the
readings.

2)  The O ring usually isn't in the diagrams.  Trust me, it's there.  Open
the top, and pull out the piston.  Remove the needle assembly.  The O ring
will be looking right up at you (note I said assembly, not just needle, you
need to remove the needle seat inside the piston).

3)  Have you lost ANY coolant?  I wonder if there's a possiblity of water
getting into your gas tank (or the gas having gone bad).  If water were
mixed in with the gas,  that would explain both the white smoke and the
lousy running....  Where is the fuel feed on the spitfire tank located?  My
Midget has it on the bottom so water could get pulled into the gas line.
Put some dry gas in the tank.....
