Well, the grease is meant to reduce friction in the bearing, and the
effectiveness of brakes depends on friction, so...

It's fairly common, but definitely not normal.
BTW: if there's grease getting into one brake drum only, affecting the
brake, you should notice a distinct pulling to one side while braking.
