In my welding class, the instructor showed us welding cast iron with
oxy-fuel. Well-cleaned surfaces, cast iron (yes!) rod, thorough
preheat of part to be welded (to 475F, as I recall) and some magic
flux. Wonderful job! (Ask at your welding shop for recommendations.)
