The charcoal in the canister absorbs the fumes that are emitted
by the gas in the gas tank, so they won't stink up the air.
Then as you drive, the carb is supposed to suck air out of the cannister,
flushing it with fresh air that enters the cannister through the filter thing
in the bottom.

If you can open the canister without destroying it, I bet it would be OK
to replace the contents.  If the existing charcoal is clean, it is probably
still OK.  If you unscrew the filter holder on the bottom, and it seems
clean and dry inside (as opposed to dripping with oil), it is probably OK.

I bet there are a lot of other replacement carbon cannisters that could
be made to work in a Spit, with a bit of hose and bracket modifications.

I am glad my canister works, since it really does help reduce pollution,
with no real impact on the car's performance.
