Basically the entire front cross member would have to be cut off and
re-welded on

>Q2 - in regards to identifying simply, a 3 0r 1 rail gear box in a Spit.
>Is it safe to assume if the main box is tapered near the tail cone it's
>a 3 rail? .... as is a straight/level bottomed gearbox is the single rail
variety?
*****************************************
Yes and no as they both use basically the same tail shaft (except that
you'll note the shifter housing is cast into the tail shaft on top, from
the bottom they will appear almost the same). But if there is no tail
shaft Its also that the top of the transmission on the three rail will have
a separate bolt on shifter casting with the "three rails" enclosed, and a
single rail selector attachment on top of that secured with four nuts while
the single rail has a large (as big as the top of the case) stamped steel
cover secured with 8 bolts and the shift rail will be a single shaft
sticking out of the back (and out of the front if in second and fourth)
-The bottoms of both units as far as the castings go look the same -
