I am in complete agreement here with Jeff.
To me all those convertible newer cars .. like the BMW's for instance don't
hold a candle to the old Triumph's and MG's.
You see, the way I feel about my spit is that I don't drive it .. it is more
like you *wear* it.
You just can't get that feeling about the new models ... not even the new
MGF's etc.
My 2¢ worth.

Terry,
Here's the way I feel about it. The true Triumph marque died out many years
ago. Just seeing the name on a new car wouldn't ignite the same passion in
me. Or if it did, the $30,000 + price tag would quickly douse the flame.
The whole appeal of these cars -- at least from my standpoint -- is that
they reflect the era from which they were built. The history, the ease of
working under the bonnet, the unrefined ride where you feel every bump in
the road, the fear of having something blow up or fall off during high revs
and sharp turns -- all these elements (and more) would be lost on a newly
manufactured car.
A good friend of mine is comtemplating the purchase of a '85 Mercedes 380 SL
"roadster" after lamenting that he's never owned a convertible recently
while we tooled through the backroads around here. I was thinking that even
though it would be a convertible, the *feeling* of driving a car like that
on these same roads just wouldn't be the same. I might be all wet in my
thinking, but simply slapping a legendary name on a new hunk of sheetmetal
and computer-assisted components just doesn't do much for me.
I'd like the fact that it doesn't leak oil all over my driveway and garage,
though...
Best wishes,
Jeff in San Diego
