Your example is certainly in the top three engineering gaffes on the Spitfire
platform. My vote for tops in bad design is the plastic trim around the 1500
wind screen. It shrinks in the sunlight and a replacement is virtually
impossible to install. The company was obviously bleeding red ink in those days.

If an award could ever be presented for the worst engineering design, it
would have to be for the Spitfire 1500 carb., intake and exhaust manifold
setup. It has to be the very worst design ever for any automobile. It is
certainly easy to understand why the lower studs were never in place on my
car. I hope this engineer is stocking shelves in a dept store someplace in a
