The term "pumpkin" refers to the whole ring gear/carrier/spider gear assy
as a unit. Many times a certain ratio requires a different carrier (that
machined piece that the ring gear bolts to) because of the requirements of
the gear design for that ratio. Usually it means that the ring gear is
pushed either further away, or nearer to the center line of the pinion gear
so the carrier face where the ring gear bolts to is machined accordingly.
So when changing to some ratios, its necessary to change the carrier also.
Rather that source all the bits separately, when using used differentials,
it's far easier just to use the whole pumpkin, already assembled if
possible - saves a little work.
