Bjoern,
>From your description of "slipping", I'd say this sounds like a clutch problem,
not an overdrive problem. I don't know what would cause the slippage only in
3rd gear, though. I've copied this to the list - maybe someone else will be
able to help you here.
As for the gearbox/diff, both of these can be worked on, but I'd never try this
myself, since I'm not a mechanic. I don't know about diffs, but reconditioned
gearboxes are extremely cheap, and replacing will probably be cheaper (and
certainly easier) than repearing unless you are able to do the repair work
yourself. Try John Kippings as a good source for a recon gearbox - I've had one
of his gearboxes in my car for nearly a year now, with no problems.

Subject: AW: OD In 3rd gear?
Hi Dean,
thanks a lot for your info. Actually, it is a 1500 and the OD slips only in
3rd. Just for confirmation: I mean by 'slipping' that the engin revs higher
but there is no power transmitted to the wheels. Is this the symptom you can
cure with the switch? Would save me a lot of money :-)
Do you know anything about the diff and the gearbox, too? (see attached
email at the end of this email)
Anyway, thank you very, very much for your help.
Cheers,
Bjoern

Bjoern,
First of all, congrats on your purchase, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Yes, you can use OD in 3rd gear, I know because I do nearly every time I use
the
car!
You say it slips in 3rd, but not in 4th. Does this happen at lower speeds,
or
is it at any speed? If it's just lower speeds, it sounds like there's not
enough oil pressure to keep it engaged - I'd guess it could be anything from
gearbox oil simply needing topping up, to a rebuild required. Can't help
you
much more here, since I have no experience.
If it slips at all speeds in 3rd, but not at all in 4th, then that sounds
like
the switch on the front of the gearbox. This is easy to fix - I know
because
I've done it myself, and if I can do it, you can too!
You didn't say what model your Spit is - following instructions are for a
1500 -
this might be the same for others, I don't know. Remove the gearbox tunnel,
and
look towards the front of the gearbox. You'll see a small unit sticking out
the
top of the gearbox, with a couple of wires coming out of it. This is a
switch
which closes when 3rd or 4th gear is engaged, and is open the rest of the
time.
Remove the switch. Is there a spacing gasket below it? If there is, remove
it
and put everything back together without it. If there isn't, you probably
need
to replace the switch.
