I know the question is regarding getting use out of the TR7 trannys, but I
thought
I'd interject that Conversion Components out of New Zealand offers a 5spd
conversion kit, that allows you to use a Toyta T2 5spd transmission in your
Spitfire.

http://www.conversioncomp.co.nz/triumphspit.htm

Now, the conversion is supposedly a bolt in (though the transmission has to
sit at a 16 deg off-set so the transmission will sit within the chassis
frame).
At approximately $1000 including shipping (or less if you can get a T2
trans),
it's not a bad alternative to the $2000+ VB is asking for the various
components
required for an OD conversion.

Of course, the 5th gear on the T2 is .86 and the OD on the spitfire single
rail J-type transmission is .79 AND the spit OD also works in 3rd gear (giving
you 5 and a half gears?)

Just something to think about,
