I doubt that they both simultaneously failed.  Also, these units are pretty 
easy to work on.
Don't assume that you automatically have to go out and get a new one.

Some advice, if you want to start digging into it:
These alternators had different types of voltage regulators over the years.
Some alternators actually needed only two of the three wires that connect to 
them.
And the regulator modules themselves came in two, three, and four-wire flavors.
In practice, they are all interchangeable.  I needed a new regulator a while 
back,
and I noticed that TRF sold one type for $12.99, and another for $35 or so.  
Naturally
I ordered the $12.99 one.  It turned out to be a genuine Lucas part (for 
whatever that's worth),
and worked fine.

Also, if the regulator is defective, or its connections are flaky, or it is 
improperly installed,
you may get no output, but you may also get a full-power unregulated output or 
18v or more...
