Ken, stick with it!  You will get it going.  When I've had problems getting
mine going it usually goes from sounding like a pile of junk to running like
a top, so don't be discouraged.  Now...

Did it backfire through the intake or exhaust ...if intake it is possible
that the pipecap was blown out (hope so).
Just speculation, but...is it possible for the pipe cap to have melted
enough to have been sucked into the combustion chamber thereby causing a
valve to stick open and thus contributing to a backfire.  The slow cranking
could be due to the plastic continuing to melt and coat the cylinder wall
with gooey plastic.  ????  Let us know.
