In the process of rebuilding my 1500 Spit, I'm just doing the steeriong
column. The column is out of the car, so will be easy, but I'd offer the
following.
With the steering wheel off I slide the inner shaft all the way to the top,
wiped grease on it and slide it down as far is it would go. Wiped grease on
that part. The steering lock prevents it from coming right out either end
until the busings are removed - too hard.
Now its back together, turns great.
