I like the idea of a Spitfire Club, or at least a separate "interest section" in
an all Triumphs organization. I feel that my local club is a great group, but it
is really focused on TRs, especially TR6s. Spitfires are a joke to TR guys- at
best just a step up to the TR goal. The lousy appreciation and resale values of
Spitfires may be a side-effect of the TR focus. Of course, I also see
discussions of prices on the list that seem unreasonably low to me. Maybe that's
a function of national region and the availability of car. I gave $2500 for my
71 (good #3 condition, professionally appraised at $3100) three and a half
years ago, and I feel now from reading the list like I was had. I see from the
Big 3 catalogs that parts prices are appreciating far faster than the cars.
Eventually, the emotional attachment I have to my car is going to lose out to
the economics of expensive replacement parts- and I haven't had to do any major
mechanical work yet.
The military stuff (Squadrons, et. al.), leaves me cold. My $.02
