I had the same experience when I opened the gauges on my 71 because the gauge
faces had started to rust around the inside edges. The gaskets crumbled to
powder when I removed the bezels. I went to my local Ace hardware store and got
O-rings of the correct diameter. I pushed the bezels back on and the tangs
easily accommodated the slightly thicker O-rings by bending slightly.

I have had no problems with the gauges fogging or re-rusting (I touched up the
faces with black paint before reassembling) since then (about three years in the
lousy Minnesota climate).
