i would replace the cable before you start worrying about
getting the speedo rebuilt. chances are if the speedo isn't
working, it's because the cable broke or rusted out.

you can pull the sender out of the tank through the trunk.
then, using an ohm-meter, move the float to both of it's
extremes. you should get something like 30ohms at full and
240ohms at empty (or vice versa). if you do, then your sender
is good. you could also rig up a test stand for your gage with
a 12volt souce, your sender, the gage, and some wire to see if
your gage is good. you might have to look at a wiring diagram
first.
