There are two ways to do it without replacing the crush sleeve. First
is as noted before, to mark the nut and put it back in the same
position. The second (and a good thing to do "just in case") is to
measure the preload with an inch/lb. torque wrench before removing the
nut, and reinstall it to the same spec plus a couple of inch/lbs. as a
new seal will add some resistance. Preload is measured without turning
the output flanges, so you're measuring the force needed to turn the
pinion only. Note the preload on a used diff is almost nothing, if you
don't take an inch/lb. measurement you'll think the nut is too loose
when you go back together.
