On my 1970, the dash backing is metal and the covering is plywood. Looks like
luan. Then the wood is covered with vinyl on my car. I have been conteplating
switching to a wood dash, a tooled stainless dash, or a carbon fiber dash.
Keeping the original so I could return it back whithout damaging the car. The
wood part just bolts to the backing.
