I thought I had a bad gasket on my ford water pump, and so I was going to
just replace it and use extra RTV sealant to stop up that hole, but someone
made the off hand comment that it's there for a reason, and that the bearing
was about to go.
You mentioned that you had a new gasket. But is the water pump new also?
The hole in the bottom of the water pump is specificaly there so that the
water pump will leak when the bearing is about to go.
Having the hole facing upward could be a bad thing.
There should be a lead pin inside of the housing that the bearing rides near.
The tolerances for the unit, allow the bearing to move without nicking away
at this lead pin. When the lead pin gets worn away, it is due to the bearing
moving/wobbeling beyond tolerances, which allows fluid to leak through and
alert you to the fact that "Hey get a new water pump before it siezes going
down the road, and your car has a melt down, dummy!"
Also, I have another comment. (People just take for granted that you know
this stuff. Well. I didn't!! I'm a moron, okay?!)
My spit running really rough after getting petrol the previous weekend.
(I always use high test 93 octain) the car was running really bad. (I
thought I was about to drop a valve.) I made the off-hand comment to my
father, that once I had a refuel earlier that day, that it seemed to stop
the problem.
Then my father suggested that I had water in the gas. His comment was
"You should never stop for gas at a station when there is a tanker there.
When the fuel is being filled into the tanks at the filling station,
especially
on humid days, water will mix in with the fuel. I thought everyone knew that."
I'm almost 30 years old and that's the first time I ever heard that.
It just so happens that there was a tanker filling up the place when I stopped
to get gas. Live and learn.
