Eric A. Yates asked

>1. Starting with car in neutral, clutch pedal out: good/bad/no difference?

I say ***** saves the starter from the strain of turning the trany parts

Eric A. Yates asked

>difference? I often wait at red lights with my car in gear and the clutch
>pedal to the floor. No idea what the vote is on this one.

John T. Blair replied
I never leave the car in gear at a light. This cause:
1. Excessive wear on the throw out bearing,
2. Excessive strain on you leg,
3. If anything happens, (your foot slips off the clutch pedal, you get
rear ended, etc.) you will likely engage the clutch and lurch forward
again, probably damaging you car. Not worth the risk.

I say **** I agree with John T. Blair on item #3, it is the same as
waiting to turn while traffic is passing in the other direction, keep the
wheels pointed straight ahead. That way if you get rear ended you don't
lurch into oncoming traffic.....

Eric A. Yates asked
>alternative is to let off the throttle and let the engine do some
"braking"

John T. Blair said "When stopping, I usually drop a gear (matching revs),"

I say **** it also saves the brakes, and the mechanical damage is when you
down shift and your going too fast for the gear and your engine over revs.
